Therapy treatments during pregnancy

September 18, 2017

Complementary therapies can be of an enormous benefit not only to you, the mother but also to your unborn baby.

Therapies during pregnancy emotionally and physiologically support you during a time when your body is undergoing many changes and can help prepare you and your body for birth.

benefits both mother and baby

Therapies can be used for pregnancy discomforts such as backache, sciatica, swollen ankles, stress and anxiety, pain relief in labour and recovery after birth.

Aromatherapy

Many essential oils are contraindicated during pregnancy, but there are many which are safe to use and can help treat nausea, alleviate anxiety, reduce swelling, ease headaches and encourage a good night's sleep.

Caution

Be cautious about using essential oils during pregnancy, especially during the first trimester, even if you are used to using them. Even oils that are generally safe during this time (see below) may be too stimulating for women who are prone to miscarriage. If you suffer from chronic illness such as asthma, heart disease or epilepsy you should be especially cautious.

If in any doubt, please do not use any essential oils, especially in the 1st trimester as some can cause miscarriage and contractions.

Because so many oils are best avoided in pregnancy, it is easier to list the safe ones:

  • gentle floral oils such as rose, neroli, ylang-ylang, chamomile

  • citrus oils such as orange, lemon, grapefruit, tangerine

  • others such as geranium, sandalwood, spearmint and frankincense

I will be writing a blog on essential oils and their use in the near future so please keep a look out for more information.
